NFL Week 3 Recap: What bettors learned

Week 3 of the NFL season is in the books and the heading into Week 4, the season is taking shape. Or is it? The games that went under the closing final total, really went Under, there is no dominate team in the NFL yet and several quarterbacks are on their way to incredible seasons. The ‘changing of the guard’ at QB is something that bettors should watch. Let’s examine what we saw last week and see if it helps us hunt for winners in Week 4.

Top Quarterback shine in Week 3
Lamar Jackson put on a show in Week 3, throwing for four touchdowns, running for one, and compiling 100 yards on the ground to becoming the second player ever (Randall Cunningham) to accomplish that feat. And he’s doing this behind fourth-string left tackle Daniel Faalele. Jackson is #1 in TDs, #2 in QBR (78.4) and has two straight game of more than 100 yards rushing. in the MVP odds posted at the top online sportsbooks, he’s now right behind Josh Allen at +550. If he has a couple of more games like he did vs. the Patriots, those odds will drop like a stone.

Marcus Mariota is here to stay in Atlanta. Mariota is starting to connect with first-round pick, TE Kyle Pitts, and that can only help moving forward. He’s thrown a couple of picks and did fumble twice, losing one, but against the Seahawks he looked comfortable in the system. The Falcons are home vs. the Browns this week as slight dogs and some early money on the Falcons has brought the number down to +1.5.

Trevor Lawrence is coming of age in 2022. Maybe is took Doug Pederson, but this year Lawrence looks like the kid everyone thought he was. He’s fired 5 TDs vs zero INTs in the last t wo games, both Jags victories, including the franchise’s first road win since 2019 last Sunday vs. the Chargers. The Jags feel different under Pederson. They had to Philly this weekend as 6 point (or more) dogs.

And Philadelphia currently has the top rated QB in football in Jalen Hurts. He’s dropped to just 6-1 in the MPV betting odds and ranks second among quarterbacks in rushing yards (167), has three touchdowns and a QBR of 74.8 (6th). The Eagles power number have risen and they are now #3 and look unstoppable. But, they face Lawrence and the Jags this week at home. The number is on the rise and Eagles backer should jump on it before it gets to the key number of 7.

Power Rankings

The Miami Dolphins are #1. Let that sink in . . . Their QB, Tua Tagovailoa is on fire and the Dolphins are the lone undefeated squad in the AFC. Solid wins over the Patriots, Ravens and Bills have the Dolphins riding high, yet they are 4 point dogs heading into Cincinnati on Thursday night. that number appears to be a bit skewed as Tua is banged up but claims he will play. If not, the Fish go with  Teddy Bridgewater, who is as solid a backup as their is in the NFL.

The Philadelphia Eagles have jumped up to the #3 spot in the power rankings from ESPN. Much of the Eagles success has come from Jalen Hurts and with upcoming games against the Jags, Steelers, Cowboys, Texans and Commanders, they may be able to stay in the top 5 through mid-November. The Eagles are now an enormous favorite at BetOnline to win the NFC East at -400. Shockingly, they are also the favorite to win the NFC, jumping ahead of the Packers, Buccaneers and Rams. Though the Eagles do look strong There may be some value in the futures market on some of the top NFC teams that are the publci darlings right now.

Tampa Bay has fallen to #8 and as is the case with the Eagles, it because of their QB. Tom Brady came back only to see a QBR of 46.9. That is the lowest in over 15 years for TB12 and The Bucs are 2-1 facing a showdown with Kansas City on Sunday Night Football. Brady has been without some of his top receivers but gets back Julio Jones and Mike Evans this week. The Early line posted over the summer at the top sportsbooks had Tampa Bay at -2.5, currently they are one point dogs.
