NBA Championship Odds Update and the Biggest Post All Star Break Surprises
NBA futures odds have shifted dramatically since opening night, with a few teams seeing massive jumps or steep drops on the championship board. Here’s a quick look at four teams whose NBA Championship odds have changed the most and what it means heading into the second half of the season
Orlando Magic
Open: +1400
Now: +9000
The Orlando Magic came into the season surrounded by serious hype from both experts and the oddsmakers. With the addition of former
Memphis Grizzlies standout Desmond Bane and expectations of a major leap from fourth-year forward Paolo Banchero, this was supposed to be the year they pushed toward the top of the Eastern Conference. Instead, it has been a letdown. Orlando currently sits 7th in the East, far from the contender many projected. While their playoff odds remain strong at -280, this is a team that was expected to battle for the number one seed, not fight to stay out of the play-in tournament.
Charlotte Hornets
Open: +100000
Now: +15000
The Charlotte Hornets still have long odds to win the title, but they were one of the hottest teams in the league heading into the break. Charlotte ripped off a nine game winning streak and won 12 of their last 15, showing just how dangerous they can be when fully healthy. Rookie Kon Knueppel has been a revelation, looking every bit like a Rookie of the Year candidate and a potential cornerstone for the franchise with the way he has been playing.
While a championship run remains unlikely, the Hornets sit at -158 to make the playoffs. It is a bit pricey, but in a weaker Eastern Conference and with the way they are trending, it could be well worth the investment. And if they do get in, do not be surprised if Charlotte becomes a trendy first round upset pick.
Detroit Pistons
Open: +5000
Now: +1400
The Detroit Pistons have been the biggest surprise in the NBA this season. Sitting at number one in the Eastern Conference with a 40 and 13
record, they have already nearly matched last year’s total of 44 wins and we are just coming out of the All-Star break. It is even more remarkable when you remember that just two seasons ago this team won only 14 games.
Head coach J. B. Bickerstaff has completely transformed the culture and turned Detroit into a legitimate contender. Cade Cunningham has taken a massive jump, emerging as a true star and currently sitting third in MVP odds at +1400.
The big question now is whether they can carry this momentum into the second half of the season. With limited playoff experience on the roster, can this young group win a series or even make a deeper run? The regular season success is undeniable, but the real test is still ahead.
Los Angeles Clippers
Open: +3500
Now: +40000
It has been a roller coaster season for the Los Angeles Clippers. They stumbled out of the gate with a brutal 6-21 start that made it feel like the year was over before it really began. Then, just as quickly, they flipped the script and went 17-7, giving fans real hope that the season had been saved.
But in a surprising move, especially considering how well they were playing, James Harden was dealt to the Cleveland Cavaliers. While their playoff hopes are not completely dead, largely because of how well Kawhi Leonard has been playing, losing a player of Harden’s caliber is a major blow. The front office also moved Ivica Zubac to the Indiana Pacers to regain first round draft capital since their own pick is controlled by the Oklahoma City Thunder. However, the selection comes with protection. The Los Angeles Clippers will keep the 2026 first round pick only if it lands between fifth and ninth overall. If it falls outside that range, it instead converts into a 2031 first round pick.
