One Last Undefeated Team In College Basketball

Miami Ohio Stands Alone as College Basketball’s Last Undefeated Team

Arizona’s loss to Kansas on Tuesday night snapped the Wildcats’ 23 game winning streak, leaving just one undefeated team remaining in all of Division I college basketball. That distinction now belongs solely to Miami Ohio, which sits at a perfect 24-0 on the season.

Beyond the straight up record, Miami Ohio has also been a gift to bettors, posting a 15-6 record against the spread. Consistency has been the calling card all season, but as March approaches, the conversation shifts from wins and covers to resume building.

And that is where the RedHawks face their biggest challenge.

March Madness is about proving to the selection committee that you belong among the best 68 teams in the country. Quality wins matter,College Basketball,Arizona,Miami Ohio,March Madness,MAC Tournament,Quad 1 Games,Miami Ohio Undefeated, gamblersworld and as things stand, Miami Ohio’s résumé is thin at the top. They currently sit 48th in the NET rankings and hold three Quad 2 victories over Wright State, Bowling Green, and Akron. While solid, those wins do not move the needle the way a marquee Quad 1 victory would.

Unfortunately for Miami Ohio, their schedule offers little opportunity to add that type of statement win. With zero Quad 1 games available, their margin for error is razor thin.

That leaves the RedHawks with two realistic paths to securing a spot in the NCAA Tournament:

First, win the MAC Tournament and remove all doubt by earning the automatic bid.

Second, run the table in the regular season and finish undefeated, then hope the committee views perfection as too impressive to ignore. Denying an undefeated team a chance at the Big Dance would be a difficult decision. The last time the RedHawks made the tournament was in 2007.

The RedHawks return to action Friday February 13th against rival Ohio as a projected 13 point favorite with a total of 161, but the bigger question is whether their perfect season and winning streak will keep rolling.
